I wanna be the girl—confident and bold

Fuck the mold

Naked

Free

Exposed to the winds

Like the leaves of an apple tree

I wanna be that girl.

Needing to be plucked

While ripened

Wanting to be fucked

I am that girl.

Ask me who I am and I’ll tell you

I’m a sweet girl.

No truth

No mastery

Only discovery in my mad, mad world

I am that girl.

Lola

“Como estas? How are you, Lola?”

Spinning around, I find a comfortable spot on one of the sofas in my suite.

“I’m fine, Papi. Thanks for asking. But I really want to know how you are.”

He sighs and the leather of the chair he sits in squeaks through the phone. “I’m fine, carino.”

“Are you dating?”

My father’s laughs. “No, darling, of course not.”

I chew on my lip. “You should, Papi. It’s been too long.”

He groans. “I find entertainment but of course, no one that I could ever call your mother. How is the Xenia?” he asks expertly changing the subject before we get too deep into it.

“Perfect and unique, as always,” I tell him looking out the window.

“Yes, yes,” he says. “I’m glad you get to use it. I don’t have much time these days, darling.”

It isn’t the truth. My father didn’t find time to be on this yacht because it reminded him too much of my mother. It had been immaculately restored nearly every five years following her death. Xenia was Sofia’s middle name. A name given to her by my Russian grandmother, her mother.

“What about you?” he asks. “Any girlfriends? Any love interests?”

With a deep breath, I tell him, “No.”

“You’ve always been so closed off, Lola,” he says softly. “After Sofia died, it was like that little light inside you went off and you stopped wanting to feel alive. Maybe it went out for me too.” He shifts in his chair and lets out another breath. “I want you to live. To be happy. I don’t want you to live in so much grief from the loss of her.”

“Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black a bit?” I chortle.

“Maybe, but I’m your father. You do as I say, not as I do.” He sucks his teeth.

“Yes, sir.”

“Sofia would’ve wanted us to be happy. To move on as hard as that is. It’s been hard for me and even though it’s been years, Lola, it all feels like it happened for me just yesterday. I miss her. I still miss her as much as I did the day she left me.”

I swallow back my tears.

My father goes on, “I spoke to your brother yesterday. He’s off in Norway somewhere.” He laughs.

“That’s good,” I tell him. “We Skype every now and again but he’s out to sea much of the time and his Wi-Fi connection can be spotty.”

Abel laughs. “Yes, it can be. It’s important the three of us keep in touch.”

A woman’s voice interrupts my father, mumbling a few words to him about boarding a helicopter in a few minutes.

“Carino, I have to go but I will call you later. But I will definitely see you when you get back to the city if I’m here.
